Engineering placement Highlights 2011

Placements are one of the key parameters to ascertain the academic excellence in the institutions.
A College grows to its full potential by providing quality placements.Placement involves mutual participation of institution, students and the industry for common benefits.
If we consider the top engineering colleges, the placement packages offered and the kind of corporates come up for campus placement drives differentiate these colleges from others. Placements are directly linked to the quality of students the institute has and for top colleges this is why there is always very stiff competition among candidates to secure admissions.
From Placement point of view we can classify institutions in 4 categories :
In the Top we have IITs , BITS Pilani which are reasonably ahead with some exclusive set of companies who only recruit from these campuses. The packages are also on a higher side than in comparison to other institutions. Placements are dominated by Top Global Consulting Firms ,Technology cos, Investment bankers, top PSUs .We dont see any mass recruiters in these premier institutions. In all IITs if talk about B.Tech level ,the top IITs have close to 150-200 companies for close to 300-400 registered students.
A number of global consulting & technology firm recruit as per their specific needs .A number of oversees cos which recruit from MIT, Stanford, Caltech etc. in US have IITs also on top of their list.Though there may not be any IIT listed in top universities survey but a number of IITs graduates either pursue masters in the listed universities or get placed in companies who recruit from these top listed Universities.
In second category we can have other top institutions like IIIT Hyderabad, IT-BHU,ISM Dhanbad, BIT Mesra,College of Engg Guindy,Jadavpur University,NIT Warangal,Trichy,DTU,NSIT,MNIT Allahabad & Jaipur, Thapar University, PEC University , HBTI, Bengal Engg & Science University , PSG College of Technology ,College of Engg - Osmania University , College of Engg -Andhra University, ICT Mumbai where we again find the top notch Software & Technology cos with development centres in India, all NITs have big presence of PSUs like BHEL,NTPC,IOCL, Powergrid, Coal India etc. In these institutions the average salary packages are in the range of 5 -6.5 lakhs.
Even in some the highest annual packages were in between 40-56 lakh for international offers.
For 2011 passed out B.Tech batches the highest annual packages to selected students in some of these institutions were:

The average packages are in the range of 3.5 - 4.5 lakh per annum. The recruitments here are dominated by IT Services companies which recruit in masses. Companies like Google, Microsoft, Texas, Cisco, Yahoo also visit some of the colleges for campus drives. Some institute might not be listed as we might not have the exact info.

Then in the final category ,we could have selected colleges state wise ,the majority of placements are in IT companies like Accenture, TCS, Cognizant, Infosys, Wipro Technologies,HCL,Capgemini, igate Patni, Birlasoft, Syntel etc.The average packages are in the range of 3 - 4 lakh per annum. The recruitments here are dominated majorly by IT Services companies who recruit in masses. Companies like Microsoft, Texas, Cisco, Yahoo in addition to other well known Software & Core sector cos visit some of the colleges in the list for campus drives. Some institutes might be missing here.
State wise, we can have some Institutes where placements are quite reasonable :
Karnataka: University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering , M.S.Ramaiah Institute of Technology,Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering , Bangalore Institute of Technology, BVB College of Engg, Sir M Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology , R N S Institute of Technology , Siddaganga Institute of Technology,NMAM Institute of Technology, Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering, KLS Gogte, JSS Academy of Technical Education , B M S Institute of Technology, B.N.M Institute of Technology, P E S School of Engineering, SDM College of Engineering, CMR Institute, Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology, JNN College of Engg, Bapuji Institute of Engg & Technology, Global Academy, Sapthagiri , KLE Society’s College of Engineering & Technology etc.
Placements by IT cos are farily good in these colleges with average packages 3-3.25 lakh per annum. Bangalore is the hub for big development centres of IT cos ,so these institutes get placement benefits for large number of entry level openings in these big IT Companies.
Tamilnadu : Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Kumaraguru College of Technology, Sri Venkateshwara College of Engineering, St Joseph College of Engineering, Govt. College of Engineering – Salem, Kongu Engg College, Sri Krishna College of Engg & Technology , Allagappa Chettiar College of Engg & Technology, Meenakshi Sundararajan Engg College, R.M.K Engineering college , Mepco Schlenk Engg College etc.
In Tamilnadu also, there are quite a good number of offers made by IT cos like Cognizant, Accenture, Infosys, Patni etc.  Chennai has good number of development centres of IT & even core cos ,so these colleges have the benefit of campus hiring for the deserving candidates.
Maharashtra : D.J.Sanghvi College of Engg, VIT Pune, K.J.Somaiya College of Engineering, MIT Pune, Thodamal Sahani Engineering College, Army Institute of Technology Pune, Fr. The placements in IT cos are good from these colleges. These colleges are able to attract good talent pool of students from the state entrance test aspirants. The average packages are in 3-3.25 lakh per annum. Some of these institutes have good placements within the core cos also.  Maharashtra is a front runner state in Industrial development , colleges who have good talent are getting some good core cos also for the campus placements. Pune has become the hub for big Auto cos like Bajaj, Mahindra,Volvo, Mercedes, Volkswagon,Tata Motors etc. A lot of big auto ancilliary units supplying to these big auto giants have started their units in Pune ,resulting in good placement opportunities for core sector students in these ancilliary companies.
North India : In north India ,the placements numbers are not so high as compared to placement figures and percentage of placements in institutes in Maharashtra, Karnataka,Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh. In north India majority of the institutions are relatively new started in last 3-4 years. As a large number of institutions were established in the period between 2007-09 ,the institutions have faced a number of challenges like faculty, good talent pool of students which are the basic requirements for good placements.
But some of the old institutions and even some of the new institutions where the management have made hard efforts to really develop the institutions into good learning centres have reasonable placement records and also good talent pool of students.
Delhi : Delhi have quite a few institutions, the quality of admitted students is also very good in most of the institutions & so the placements are also quite good in some of the institutions.
Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology for Women : Under IP University colleges, IGIT has the most impressive placement record . Students were offered jobs in cos like Adobe, C-DOT, Microsoft in addition to other IT cos. IGIT could be the only college among the IP university affiliated colleges from where the Microsoft had selected the students. 4 students were selected even though the college is exclusively for Girls.
USIT : USIT also has good placements .Adobe also had selected 2 students from the last batch. Other placements offers were made up cos like TCS, Birlasoft, Patni, Infogain etc.
MAIT: Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology is also one of the most preferred colleges under IP university. The IT cos Infosys & Accenture are the mass recruiters from the institute. For eligible students placements is not an issue. Mass recruiters find good pool of students here ,so they pick the best available across all streams.
Bharti Vidyapeeth College of Engg: Another preferred college under IP University. TCS is the mass recruiter in BVP followed by good number of offers by HCL, Birlsoft, Infogain & Aricent. Placements for eligible students is not an issue.
Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Technology : Infosys ,HCL are the among the mass recruiters. Other IT sectors cos do offer jobs in small bunches. Placements for the eligible student is also not an issue here.
In other colleges the placements are not so high as in these institutions but still those who are eligible and does well could get placed through the Joint campus drives in other colleges as the admitted students in most of the IP university engineering colleges are of good quality.
Uttar Pradesh : Uttar Pradesh has some colleges where the placements are quite good and IT cos are the mass recruiters in these institutions.
Jaypee Institute of Information & Technology : Placements are not an issue. The mass recruiters are Infosys & Accenture with very high number of offers. The quality of admitted students is quite good ,so is one of favourite campuses for IT cos to have mass recruitments.
Other institutuions under MTU where the mass recruitments are done by IT Cos in NCR region are JSS, AKG, Galgotias, KIET, ABES, MIET, IMS, IPEC, RKGIT, NIET, G .L Bajaj etc. In the Govt institutions like IET Lucknow, KNIT & MMM the placements are also good for the eligible students . Other institutions where the placements are offered though the percentage might not be so high are Babu Banarasi Das National Institute of Technology & Management, Shri Ram Murti Samarak College of Engg, Shri Ram Swaroop Memorial College of Engg & Management, Bharat Institute of Technology etc.
 Haryana :
A small majority of institutions are there in Haryana who offer reasonable placements .Haryana has close to 145 engineering colleges right now but majority of colleges were established in between 2007 -09.
From placement point of view ,the institutions with reasonable placements figures are :
Govt Institutions : YMCA University of Sciene & Technology : Placements are reasonably good .In 2011 in IT cos TCS was the mass recruiter followed by HCL. The good thing is there were lot of  good core sector cos who regularly recruit from the campus with packages in the range of 4-5 lakh per annum.
DeenBandhu Chhotu Ram Murthal University : For eligible candidates ,the placement options are good with a mix of IT and core sector cos. The main companies for campus drives were TCS,Tech Mahindra,Birla Soft, Minda Motors,BEL, Suzuki Powertrains, Escorts, ISGEC, Minerva, ISMT, Eicher Engines Ltd, Voltas Ltd. Average package for 2011 batch was 3.54 lacs.
IMT Gurgaon : IMT Gurgaon also has good placement records. TCS is the mass recruiter. TCS had made 177 offers for 2012 batch recently. Overall the placement percentage remains good with 20-25 companies visiting the campus.
Other Institutions with reasonable placements are : Seth Jaiprakash Mukund Lal Institute of Engg & Technology- Yamuna Nagar, Manav Rachna - Faridabad, Lingaya’s,-Faridabad ,Dronacharya College of Engg - Gurgaon, TITS Bhiwani, NC College of Engg, PDM College of Engg , Panipat Institute of Engg & Technology, World College of Technology & Management , BM College of Engg & Technology etc.
In this list, there are some colleges where the on campus drives were not so high but the students have done fairly well in joint campus drives conducted in other colleges.
In Haryana as earlier mentioned a large number of colleges have been established in between 2007-09 . In our personal view ,among these new colleges there are just 3-4 colleges which have established themselves in the way that they can make steady progress in future and the students who does academically well get good support facilities from the institutes so that they can be made employable atleast through joint campus drives. This way they will be able to attract a good pool of students which is most important to achieve respectable placement records.

Govt. Engineering Colleges : A review on academics & placements

Govt. Engineering colleges run by State Govts are preferred by lot of top rankers from the State conducted CET or AIEEE  ( Whatever be the criterion for admissions).

Even the parents also give preference to Govt colleges over good private engineering colleges.
If one is not able to make it to IITs,NITs,IIITs all under Central Govt ,then the first preference is for Govt Colleges in the States from where one belongs to.

These Govt. colleges attract a good talent pool of students and some even have the quality of admitted students comparable to some NITs.There is not a big gap in the ranks of students who got admitted into NITs and these Govt colleges run by respective State Govts.
But if we compare the quality of academics and placements, the difference is huge.

This is more in Govt Engineering Colleges in the North Indian States. Barring a few colleges, the others are just giving a very average scope of learning and job prospects for the admitted students.
The placements are just 20-30%.  A lot of colleges does not even have full fledged placement cells. The Professor from some department has been given the additional responsibility for T&P department which results in a handful of companies for the campus placements with very mediocre companies & salary packages. Even a lot of private colleges are doing better than these Govt. colleges even when quality of admitted students in these private colleges is not at par with these Govt. colleges.

The Govts should take a serious view in this regard and should discuss with the Directors / Principals about their requirements so that the improvements could be done faster.
20-30% final placements show that hardly the efforts are put in for training and industry relations.
These colleges have lot of resources at their disposal to make them centres of excellence but to utilize these resources to the maximum should be strived from all stakeholder

Aspiring students and parents need to be more informed while making a decision of taking admissions in govt. colleges.

AIEEE 2012 online Vs offline mode

CBSE,the authority to conduct All India Engineering Entrance Examination ( AIEEE) had started with online mode in 2011 also but in a very limited way and the response was also very very limited.Candidates were free to choose the mode of examination and a maximum of one lakh candidates could appear for online but hardly 5000 opted for this option out of 11lakh plus aspirants.
For AIEEE 2012, CBSE again has both online and offline mode but this year CBSE has made the provision to ensure that the number of online aspirants should be reasonably very high and 22 cities ( all big cities in India) will have only online mode of examinations. Those who wish to take offline exam from these cities have to move to other cities.
Conducting online test could have lot of plus points. A lot of authorities either conducting or contemplating to conduct online tests. But in other tests the authorities have a single mode of examination for all candidates,so there is no scope of confusion among the aspirants.
But the matter of  debate in dual mode adopted by CBSE for AIEEE is on the issue of level playing fields between the two modes for the same test. For an entrance examination of the magnitude and of importance like AIEEE, the most critical part is to make sure that both offline & online version should not give any process or physical advantage to the candidates by virtue of which the score or ranks could be affected.
The opinions in these 22 cities are very divided among all stakeholders whether students & their parents, Coaching institutions or mentors in selecting online or offline mode.
The majority feel this safe to go for offline mode rather than experimenting with online mode. The type and level of concerns are also very varied.
Some have apprehension in regard to the the ability of the authorities to conduct online exam on such a mass scale without any snag as was happened with the first online attempt for CAT. Some feel that if they will choose offline ,then pressure of traveling to other cities could impact on the performance and others are of the opinion that online version will give them the advantage to choose the time and day or even some extra days for preparation.
But these cant be the major cause for concern as far as the level playing field in both modes are concerned.Thorough preparation for AIEEE syllabus requires long consistent hard work & intelligence and to think that getting extra 10-15 days to appear for exam can give someone advantage over others might not be so convincing.
If we analyse a bit deep into the examination ,then there could be two-three issues that could have some impact on level playing fields in two modes.Though these are just assumptions and may or may not applicable to all aspirants. As there are some aspirants who are so thoroughly prepared that these issues are immaterial for them.
But still if we analyse the previous year scores ,there are even 1-1.5 thousand candidates who score equal marks and this was very common among the students in the bracket of ranks 25000-50000. So here even a difference of 3-4 marks could result in a rank difference of 5000.
One important point in these two modes could be on level of difficulty:
If we assume 5-6 lakh candidates appear for online exam, then the question bank for each subject needed would be quite large considering the trend that questions never get repeated. To keep this large number of questions at the same difficulty level is not that easy. There is no idea given by CBSE as how many students will appear in one shift each day and whether all these candidates who will appear in the same shift on a given day will have same questions.
So there are two different scenarios for difficulty level viz
 a. level of difficulty among the online aspirants
 b. the level of difficulty in comparison to Pen –Paper mode & online aspirants.

Even in AIEEE 2011,when the entrance exam was held twice that mean only two set of question papers were there but still we heard lot of different voices on the level of difficulty.
In addition this might imply on online aspirants for even wider and thorough coverage of syllabus as to have large number of questions means wider coverage of syllabus and more conceptual nature of questions.
The other point to be considered for level playing field in these two modes could be the ease to attempt questions:
As the questions in AIEEE test are very conceptual, analytical & calculation based ,the synchronization for viewing and understanding the question on screen and immediately solving with the help of  Pen –Paper might someway affect not  all but to a lot of candidates because to have this continous neck & eye movement from computer screen to rough sheet could be a trouble maker.Even in the mock test which are available now the candidates should test this neck movement for entire 3 hours to check for any pain or discomfort in the neck.
Whereas for Pen Paper mode, the neck movement will not be there in viewing and solving the questions on the rough sheet and calculations could be done faster.Though for online aspirants clicking the answer could save time in comparison to circling in offline mode.
Even the panel from IIT Council in a presentation for conducting IIT JEE online has the major issues in regard to the deep conceptual and analytical nature of questions which needs lot of  Pen & Paper calculations to solve the questions. In the present format the Pen-paper mode seemed more comfortable to the panel.
Still we hope that the authorities will take care of even the minutes of issues so that there wont be any discrepencies in the conduct of examinations in online & offline mode.

Engineering education is no doubt the most sought after career option after 12th class in India.
Getting admission into Top Engineering Colleges is quite tough and competitive and requires lot of dedication & hard work.
Every year close to 13 lakh students appear for various Engineering Entrance exams.
There are just few thousands seats available in Top Engineering colleges like IITs and NITs.
In this article, we have ranked the most preferred IITs & NITs on the basis of preference by the top rank holders in JEE 2011 & AIEEE 2011.

On the basis of the preference of JEE 2011 rank holders under General Category, the ranking of IITs are:

  1. IIT Bombay

If we take the performances of the candidates from different states, Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of candidates among the top rankers followed by UP & Rajasthan. So in NITs like Warangal,Allahabad & Jaipur, the Home State Cadidates have far better ranks than the Home state candidates for other NITs.
In Karnataka & Tamilnadu, the number of candidates who appeared for AIEEE were quite less as compared to the candidates who appeared for respectctive State level tests KCET & TNEA.
In Karnataka, only close to 20,000 students appeared in AIEEE in comparison to the approximate 75,000 students appeared in Karnataka CET for engineering.
Likewise in Tamilnadu, only close to 26,000 candidates appeared for AIEEE in camparison to the 1,48,000 students appeared for Tamilnadu Engineering Admissions ( TNEA) 2011.

The rankings on the basis of preference by Top rank holders both at All India level as well as well as Home State level are as follows:

  1. NIT Warangal

  15. NIT Jalandhar
  16. NIT Patna
  17. NIT Raipur
  18. NIT Silchar
  19. NIT Srinagar
  20. NIT Agartala

In these rankings also, we can put these NITs under three categories :
