Top Engineering Colleges in India

Top Engineering Colleges in India
Most Preferred IITs & NITs in India in 2011

Engineering education is no doubt the most sought after career option after 12th class in India.
Getting admission into Top Engineering Colleges is quite tough and competitive and requires lot of dedication & hard work.
Every year close to 13 lakh students appear for various Engineering Entrance exams.
There are just few thousands seats available in Top Engineering colleges like IITs and NITs.
In this article, we have ranked the most preferred IITs & NITs on the basis of preference by the top rank holders in JEE 2011 & AIEEE 2011.

On the basis of the preference of JEE 2011 rank holders under General Category, the ranking of IITs are:

  1. IIT Bombay
  2. IIT Delhi
  3. IIT Kanpur
  4. IIT Madras
  5. IIT Kharagpur
  6. IIT Roorkee
  7. IIT Guwahati
  8. IT BHU
  9. ISM Dhanbad

The IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi are the most favourites.
In IIT Bombay the 70% seats out of the total seats under General  category were filled up under the JEE rank 1000 and even IIT Bombay was preferred by close to 65-67 students among the Top 100 JEE rank holders under General category.
In IIT Delhi around 59% seats out of the total seats under General category were filled up under the JEE rank 1000.
The most preferred branches were Electrical,CSE,Mechanical in the Top IITs.

Similarly on the basis of AIEEE 2011 top rank holders, the NITs are also ranked on the basis of preference by Top rank hoders in AIEEE 2011.
NITs are ranked on two basis. In NITs 50% seats are filled by All India candidates and the remaining 50% seats are filled by the candidates from the state where particular NIT is situated.
Ranking on the basis of All India level Preference under General Category.
We have considered the preference of the top rankers for the 6 most common engineering streams viz Chemical,Civil,CSE,Electrical / EEE,ECE, Mechanical Engg.

  1. NIT Surathkal
  2. NIT Trichy
  3. NIT Warangal
  4. MNIT Allahabad
  5. MNIT Jaipur
  6. NIT Calicut
  7. NIT Kurukshetra
  8. VNIT Nagpur
  9. MANIT Bhopal
  10. NIT Rourkela
  11. SVNIT Surat
  12. NIT Durgapur
  13. NIT Jamshedpur
  14. NIT Jalandhar
  15. NIT Hamirpur
  16. NIT Raipur
  17. NIT Patna
  18. NIT Silchar
  19. NIT Srinagar
  20. NIT Agartala

The other ranking is on the basis of preference by Top rank holders for both All India level and Home State Level.
We have done these two rankings as the candidates in some states are more competititve than in others. This ranking also gives us the idea about the NITs which has the maximum top rank holders.
If we take the performances of the candidates from different states, Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of candidates among the top rankers followed by UP & Rajasthan. So in NITs like Warangal,Allahabad & Jaipur, the Home State Cadidates have far better ranks than the Home state candidates for other NITs.
In Karnataka & Tamilnadu, the number of candidates who appeared for AIEEE were quite less as compared to the candidates who appeared for respectctive State level tests KCET & TNEA.
In Karnataka, only close to 20,000 students appeared in AIEEE in comparison to the approximate 75,000 students appeared in Karnataka CET for engineering.
Likewise in Tamilnadu, only close to 26,000 candidates appeared for AIEEE in camparison to the 1,48,000 students appeared for Tamilnadu Engineering Admissions ( TNEA) 2011.

The rankings on the basis of preference by Top rank holders both at All India level as well as well as Home State level are as follows:

  1. NIT Warangal
  2. MNIT Allahabad
  3. MNIT Jaipur
  4. NIT Surathkal
  5. NIT Trichy
  6. VNIT Nagpur
  7. MANIT Bhopal
  8. NIT kurukshetra
  9. NIT Calicut
  10. NIT Surat
  11. NIT Rourkela
  12. NIT Jamshedpur
  13. NIT Hamirpur
  14. NIT Durgapur
  15. NIT Jalandhar
  16. NIT Patna
  17. NIT Raipur
  18. NIT Silchar
  19. NIT Srinagar
  20. NIT Agartala

In these rankings also, we can put these NITs under three categories :
The First Category has the NITs like Warangal,Allahabad,Jaipur,Surathkal, Trichy Second Category has NITs like Kurukshetra, Nagpur & Calicut.
Third Category has the remaining NITs where the Cut offs specially the Home State Cut offs ranks are reasonably high.
Even there are lot of other State Govt and Private College / Universities who are ranked better than the NITs in third category.

Some other important statistics related to NITs are :
Only 21 candiates out of Top 1000 rank holders in AIEEE 2011 took admissions in NITs.
Only 757 candidates under General category out of Top 5000 rank holders in AIEEE 2011 took admissions in NITs.There were close to 4400 General candidates out of Top 5000 candidates.
